One of the quotes that have most impacted my life comes from Dr. Marian Wright Edelman, the founder of the Children’s Defense Fund. She says that the most dangerous place for a child to live is at the intersection of race and poverty.
Our church made the decision some time ago that if we ever did a capital campaign, this would be a guiding force. It’s typically much easier to rally church people to put their money into a beautiful, safe, comfortable worship center. It’s much more difficult to get church people to rally around a place that is located in a neglected, troubled part of town.
That’s one of the many reasons that I am so incredibly grateful for the community of men and women at River City Community Church. They have bravely forged ahead with this vision, and have given sacrificially to a project that is as much about the neighborhood as it is our own church body.
We have an 8+ year relationship with Cameron Elementary, who faithfully serves at the most intense intersection of race & poverty in our neighborhood, and we knew that our long term church home needed to be within walking distance of the school. We have been plugging away at this campaign for what seems forever, and now the time has finally come. We are just about to move into this new space, and step into a new chapter in our church’s story.
We haven’t received the final permit yet, so yesterday we had a big lunch in the new building to pray over it together. One of our members is Charlie Billups, and he is an amazing photographer. He got so many beautiful shots of our church community yesterday, and I’m excited to share his post. Meet some of the courageous, loving, amazing people of River City Community Church!
