“He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain that which he cannot lose.”

I am in a week long intensive class for my Doctoral of Ministry program focused on comprehensive community development.

We had the opportunity to sit with Dr. John Perkins for the last 2 days.  Dr. Perkins is 81 years old tomorrow, and is one of the most active champion of civil rights and Christian community development in our country. His life story is so inspirational and the legacy he has left behind is breathtaking.

A number of times over the two day lecture Dr. Perkins quoted Jim Elliot, the Christian missionary who, along with four others, was killed trying to reach Waodani people.  This is one of Elliot’s most enduring quotes and I have found it to be incredibly inspiring:

“He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain that which he cannot lose.”

I was looking online to verify the quote, and came across this image from the Wheaton archives showing his devotional notes from which this originally came. I hope it lifts your spirits the way it has lifted mine!

One response to ““He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain that which he cannot lose.””
