Breaking Bread with Jesus, p1

“Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with them, and they with me.” (Revelation 3.20)

I have thought a lot about this verse over the past couple of months.  It is a pretty profound and picturesque invitation.  Jesus Christ, according to the Bible, is knocking at the door of our hearts and inviting us to eat with him.

I believe this picture probably stands on its own without explanation, but it takes on additional meaning when you look at the invitation through the lens of ancient hospitality.  In ancient culture a meal – particularly a dinner – was a central event in the life of a family.  Once the sun went down there was nothing left to do (no electric lights of course), so to invite someone over for a meal was more than just sharing food.  It was to invite someone into an intimate family space and into the full rhythm of that person or family’s life.

So that is the picture – that is the invitation.  Jesus knocks at the door of our heart and wants to be invited into the full rhythms of our life.

That inspired the series we are currently in at River City: “Breaking Bread with Jesus.”  If you actually had the opportunity to share a dinner with Jesus Christ, what do you think he would say to you?
